Atomic Clocks

Atomic clocks (also called radio controlled clocks) receive radio transmissions that are highly accurate and set themselves accordingly. The radio transmissions get their timing information from the United States master atomic clock, which is based on the natural resonance of the cesium atom, hence the name, "atomic clock". Of course to remain accurate to a fraction of a second, atomic clocks need to be able to receive the radio signal. Like any radio receiver, the signal may not reach them in some locations. The United States Government National Institute of Standards and Technology maintains a radio station, WWVB, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. This radio station transmits highly accurate time information. Atomic, or Radio Controlled clocks receive this signal when they can, and set themselves. These will maintain time accurate to a fraction of a second as long as they are placed in a location where they can receive the signal. Like any radio receiver however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or cordless phones that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable.
