Maverick
ET-7 Wireless
Remote-Check
Dual Probe Remote Cooking Thermometer
|
|
|
The Maverick
Remote-Check ET-7 is a programmable radio frequency food
thermometer that lets you monitor the cooking times and internal temperatures of
two different meats (or other foods) in your oven or barbecue grill from up to 100 feet away.
Whether you're entertaining or just cooking for the family, the the ET-7 can make life a little easier for
you. That's because while you're away from the
oven or grill tending to your guest's needs, the
ET-7 is minding the cooking and getting ready to tell you when your foods
are done. Your days of running back and forth between guests and oven or
grill, hoping that you haven't waited too long and overcooked the foods, will be
history.

The ET-7 Remote-Check Wireless Cooking Thermometer
from Maverick consists of two separate units plus
two 8.25-inch temperature probes on 39-inch stainless
steel wires. One of the units is a thermometer sensor with wireless radio transmitter and sockets for connecting the probes. The other unit is a portable monitor and receiver.
The receiver has programmable meat settings, target and current
meat temperature displays,
a clock with two countdown/count-up timers, and a beeper to alert you to the status of the meats that you're
cooking. Maximum transmission range of the thermometer sensor is 100 feet (30 meters).

Different types and cuts of
meat and poultry often make it difficult to determine the correct temperature and length of cooking time. But now the
Remote-Check ET-7 not only makes this task easy (for two different
meats!) but also tells you when your foods are done, even when you're away from the grill
or oven tending to the needs of your guests or family. Simply insert the metal
probes of the cooking thermometer into the foods, select the type of meats and
the doneness levels to which you want your food cooked or the times you want
them to cook, and set the alarms on the receiver unit. Then clip the receiver to your belt or waistband. When the
receiver's alarms sound, your foods are done.
On the transmitter, the
internal food temperature is displayed in °F in digits about
7/16 inch tall. On the receiver, the internal food temperature is displayed in your choice of °F or °C in digits about
3/8 inch tall. Target food temperature digits on the
receiver are about 1/4 inch tall, and clock/timer hour and
minute digits are big and bold at 9/16 inch tall (seconds are
about 5/16 inch).
Using the ET-7's Thermometers
The ET-7 is easy to
operate. Let's say, for example, that you will be grilling steak and
chicken breast. First, preheat your oven or grill. Plug the two probes into the
transmitter. Power up the receiver and then, within 60 seconds, the transmitter. Insert probe 1 into the thickest part of the steak and probe 2 into the thickest part of a
chicken breast. Place both on the grill. The upper display of the
receiver
shows remote sensor (probe) 1 or 2, the meat selection, and the level of doneness.
Press S1/S2 so REMOTE SENSOR 1 is displayed, and select the type of meat.
Your choices are Beef, Lamb, Veal, Pork, Turkey, and Chicken, so you'll
select Beef. Then
select the desired level of doneness for the beef by pressing TASTE.
Choose Rare, Medium Rare, Medium, or Well
Done. For this example, we'll select Medium.
Before we get to the chicken, we'll tell
you that you can select USDA-recommended temperatures for the doneness
levels or raise or lower the doneness level temperatures. If you select
the Table A temperature range, the doneness levels are at the
USDA-recommended temperatures. If you select Table B, you can raise the
doneness level range by 10°F or lower it by 20°F. For your steak, the temperature is now
preset to the
USDA temperature table A for Medium at 160 °F. The letter A or B for the selected table
appears just below the SET TEMP in the
receiver's LCD panel.
Now for the chicken breast: Press S1/S2 so REMOTE SENSOR 2 is
displayed, and press the meat button so that CHICK is displayed. Then select
the desired level of doneness by pressing TASTE (for poultry, your
choice is automatically Well Done).
Press the arrow up button to adjust the temperature until 185 °F
is shown under SET TEMP and A or B. The letter B appears to
indicate that the USDA-recommended temperature for Well Done has been
adjusted.
When the temperature of probe sensor
1 reaches MEDIUM, the receiver beeps continuously. Also, if REMOTE SENSOR 1 is the active
display, 160°F under
PROBE TEMP blinks continuously. When probe sensor 2 reaches its SET TEMP of 185 °F, the
receiver again beeps continuously. Also, REMOTE SENSOR 2 blinks
continuously to indicate that the chicken has reached its set
temperature of
185°F. The receiver also beeps and blinks after 2 minutes if the PROBE
TEMP temperature remains above the SET TEMP temperature. The alerts
cease if the PROBE TEMP temperature falls below the SET TEMP temperature. The alerts can be turned off
completely simply by pressing
the STOP button.
Using the ET-7's Timers
You can use each of the two independent timers (T1
and T2) in the ET-7 receiver as either a countdown or count-up timer. If
desired, you can use the ET7's thermometers and timers in conjunction
with one another for the same cooking task, or you can monitor one food's cooking progress in the
temperature mode while using the timer mode to keep track of
another cooking task. You
can return to the clock mode while either or both timers are active, and
they will continue to operate.
To use T1 or T1 as a countdown timer, you select
the timer and then enter the time directly as hours and minutes. When
you press START/STOP to start the timer, a down arrow (for countdown
mode) flashes, and the time (including seconds) counts down. When
a timer expires, the receiver beeps and flashes its time display for 20
seconds. So that you'll know immediately which timer has expired, T1 has
a single-beep pattern while T2 sounds with dual beeps. Also, each timer
starts to count up when its countdown time reaches 0 so you'll know how
much additional time has expired. You press START/STOP a second time to
stop a timer, and you clear it by simultaneously pressing HRS (hours)
and MINS (minutes).
To use T1 or T2 as a count-up timer, simply select
it and press START/STOP to begin the count-up. An up arrow (for count-up
mode) flashes, and the time counts up. Press START/STOP a second time to
stop the count-up, and then press HRS and MINS simultaneously to clear
the timer. If the count-up reaches its maximum of 23:59, the receiver
beeps and both arrows blink for 20 seconds.
Additional Information
We should mention a few more things here. A red LED on the front of the
transmitter flashes to tell you that it is on and transmitting, and an antenna icon on the
receiver displays a wave to indicate that it is receiving. The receiver comes with a
snap-on bracket that can serve as a belt clip, wall hanger, or table
stand. The transmitter has a snap-on bracket that serves as a wall
hanger or table stand. Finally, some doneness levels are not selectable
for certain meat types. For example, Well Done is the only available
selection for chicken and turkey. These doneness level restrictions are
for safety reasons (to ensure that any nasty bacteria are killed).
The ET-7 transmitter is powered by
two AA (1.5V) batteries, and the receiver is powered by two AA (1.5V) batteries. All four batteries are
included
These batteries are carbon-zinc heavy duty
batteries, but when replacement becomes necessary, we recommend alkaline
batteries. The ET-7 is covered by a
manufacturer's 90-day limited warranty.
Cautions:
-
Do not use the stainless steel probes and wires in microwave ovens.
-
Do not use the probes and wires above 410°F (210°C) because doing so will deteriorate the wire.
-
Do not expose either unit to direct heat or water.
-
Always wear a heat-resistant glove to touch the probes or wires during or after cooking.
-
Do not submerge the units in water. Clean them with a damp cloth instead.
-
Clean the food probes after each use, but do not submerge
them in water.
